I love this place! Every time I have been here, things do seem to end up a little shady… There are a few likely reasons for this. Perhaps it is because whenever I am here I drink too much? It could be that I don’t eat enough? Or it could be that I used to work almost above it and would race down on a Friday night after work to ‘let off a little steam’…. I suspect a combination of all… But one thing I can tell you for sure…. I always have fun here.
Run by Anton Forte (ex-Lotus) and Jason Scott (ex-Victoria Room) and aided by some furry friends and hairy barstaff, Shady Pines Saloon is the most perfect place to drown your sorrows or cheers to the finer moments in life.
The menu here is extensive – you can see it above. It is about A3 size and that’s only for drinks! The cocktails are beautiful, I have sipped often but I have never really ordered one here, preferring to stick to either beer or a bottle of Prosecco (ususally $40). Another thing to note; no food. Weeeelllll, that’s not strictly true. They do dish out bowls of unshelled peanuts in plentiful abundance and they can order in pizzas for you, just ask at the bar. Personally, I’d recommend sticking to the peanuts, there’s nothing quiet like a mouthful of dry peanut butter followed by a cold crisp beer. These boys have that one nailed.
Speaking of nailed…. You’ll find a few things nailed to the walls here. Least of all being the furry creatures, great and small. My last head count covered a moose, a water buffalo, a fox, a mountain cat, fish, birds, a lobster, an indian chief and a deer. I’m sure there are more, lurking in the shadows but you get the idea. If it’s dead and stuffed, I’m pretty sure it will eventually find a happy home here.
Apart from all things furry, you’ll also find some really great vintage items of American decent. Old trays, lamps, rugs over the concrete floor (no it’s not polished) and the most amazing old pharmacy dispensary… which I covet every time I visit.
You’ll also find twinkling fairy lights, timber chairs and tables apparently salvaged from the now defunct Arizona’s Steakhouse.
The energy in this bar is always friendly, warm and laid-back. The crowd is Surry Hills cool but without any pretension or awkwardness. It seems as though everyone is just always happy when they are here… or perhaps that’s just me projecting my happiness? Whatever the case, the second you walk through the door, hear the rockabilly western tunes, sip your favourite drink, you’ll feel your day slip away and melt to a distant memory as you transport yourself to a different time and place, where things are just a little slower and easier….
If you haven’t been… GO..!
